Did you know that cough syrup is no longer recommended by the APA? For any children, but especially under the age of 4. Is that surprising?!
So what’s a mama to do when her babies are suffering??
Make an herbal chest salve.
Well, it’s really no secret I love me some herbal remedies. And I honestly wouldn’t have ever used any of that other junk anyway. And that’s why I keep a well stocked herbal remedy cabinet (well, actually it’s this shelf). So, when my little one came down with some persistent respiratory issues (he was hackin’ up a lung I swear!) I turned to my essential oils. This recipe is easy to make, very easy to use, and super effective. It’s the perfect way to naturally support his body to heal itself.
Herbal Chest Salve Recipe:
1/4 cup Coconut Oil
1/4 cup Fractionated Coconut Oil
1 heaping tablespoon Beeswax pellets
20 drops Frankincense essential oil
20 drops Marjoram essential oil
20 drops Lime essential oil
20 Drop Basil essential oil
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
10 drops Cardamom essential oil
5 drops Eucalyptus essential oil
5 drops Lemon essential oil
5 drops Rosemary essential oil
- Melt the first three ingredients in a double boiler (or a glass measuring cup in a pot of boiling water).
- When it’s all melted and combined, let it sit and cool for several minutes. If you add the essential oils in when it’s too hot it will decrease the effectiveness of the oils.
- Once the mix is cooled slightly, add the essential oils. Mix, and pour into storage containers.
- Once it’s hardened it will be a semi-solid salve and you’ll be able to easily scoop a bit out and rub it on the chest when dealing with persistent respiratory issues.
So whip this up so you have it on hand this fall and winter! It’s a must have around here!
