Let there be pears!
I mentioned in my food storage post last week that we would be going to a local organic orchard to pick as many Asian Pears as possible. Well, that’s exactly what we did last week. We picked 40lbs of pears! It was so fun and a truly beautiful place to spend our morning.
I feel so very blessed to live near so many U-Pick farms. This spring we went to a blueberry farm, and went back several times. Very much like the blueberry farm we went to in the spring, this orchard was immaculately tended, a small family business, and the farmer’s passion for their farm just beamed. I love to take my girls to these places, and have them not only experience and be a part of the process of putting food on the table, but to see and feel the farm, to meet the farmers face-to-face. I was so inspired by their hard work and dedication to produce healthy food and preserve the land and our aquifers through organic farming practices.
It was a truly inspiring (and tasty!) experience, one that I hope you’ll seek out in your own area. Supporting local farmers is so important to build up a stronger community and a more secure food supply. And it’s just a lot of fun too! If you’re unsure of where to find farms in your area, look them up at LocalHarvest.org. Get outside, enjoy the sunshine and fresh air, pick some local fruit and support your local farmers. You won’t regret it!
