Y’all know I like to keep things nice and natural around here. After all, making a ‘green’ lifestyle shift was really our first step towards homesteading. So when I started learning about essential oils, I was really intrigued. Just a couple of years later and I’ve integrated them into my daily routine. With so much information about essential oils on the internet lately, I think it can get kind of overwhelming when thinking about how exactly you’d use them. I’ve shared before how I’ve set up our natural Family First Aid and Personal First Aid kits, but today I’m going to show you a glimpse into my average everyday essential oil routine. Ready? Let’s dive in!
My Daily Essential Oil Routine:
Wake up: Brush my teeth with the immunity blend toothpaste and slather on some of my homemade deodorant. And I use a drop of the grounding blend on my wrists and rub 2 drops of it on the bottoms of my feet to help keep me grounded and, well, emotionally balanced throughout the day. And as a mom of two small kids, I need that balance! I could write a whole post just on this blend, I love it that much.
Work Out: I love yoga and I’ve been dabbling in running as well. I love using soothing blend rub. It is amazing, y’all. It’s like an all natural icy-hot lotion. It’s great for pre and post-workouts. I use it on my knees after running, and my wrists (if you do yoga, you hear me on that one!) and any other muscle or joint discomfort. Totally fabulous, I really love it.
Mid-Morning Diffuser: I like to run a nice uplifting blend in the diffuser to keep me motivated and energized. One of my favorites lately has been Wild Orange and Lime. Smells amazing and helps keep me focused, energized, and up beat.
Outdoors: If the mosquitoes are being a particular pain, I whip out my homemade bug repellent. And if one of the kids get a sting or bite, I usually use a drop of Lavender to help with the discomfort.
Homestead: These chores aren’t everyday, but I thought it would be good to include them here anyway. I like to use a mix of Peppermint and water to spray around the windows and doors outside the house to deter spiders and pests. I also add some Melaleuca to apple cider vinegar when doing any seasonal cleaning projects, like deep cleaning the chicken coop.
Clean up: I make almost all my own cleaning products. I use a nice all-purpose cleaner for counters and whatnot, it’s about a cup each of vinegar and water plus several drops of essential oil (either a citrus oil, OnGuard or Purify, all are great anit-microbials). I use that same cleaner with a little olive oil added in as a mopping solution for my wood floors….but let’s be real, this Mama ain’t mopping everyday! I also make a laundry fabric softener with 16oz of vinegar and about 10 drops of whatever essential oils make me happy at the time I mix it up, such as, Lavender, Basil, Purify, or Lemon.
Lemon/Lime Water: I don’t really like drinking water. To help me keep properly hydrated, I like to had a drop or two of Lemon or Lime (or both!) to my water. Not every glass I drink, but usually at least one or two has a bit of citrus oil in it. It tastes nice (which helps me want to drink it!) and it works as a gentle detox. Way better then the artificial flavorings to can buy for your water!
Kids Bedtime: If the kids are particularly wild in the evening, I’ll diffuse some Lavender to help them wind down. I also use this homemade detangle spray with Lavender after the girls’ bath. Then before their bedtime stories, I usually rub some the calming blend on the bottoms of their feet or put a drop under their pillows. They ask for this now, and I notice a big difference in how long they stay up bouncing around in their room before they actually fall asleep. I always have the calming blend in my arsenal! I use it on myself some nights too if I have trouble sleeping.
My Bedtime: I’m kind of terrible at taking care of my skin, but I’ve started trying to diligently use the oil cleansing method. I use about a dime sized amount of almond oil and add a drop of either Melaleuca (for blemishes) or Frankincense (for keeping my skin young and vibrant). And sometimes, if I really force myself to take the time, I’ll take a lovely rejuvenating epsom salt bath with some of my favorite essential oils. Some of these include, basil and lavender, juniper berry and cypress, or grounding blend.
And that’s a typical day! If there are any scrapes or cuts, I break out my homemade healing balm. If anyone is unwell, I have immunity blend diffusing. If anyone has head or neck tension, or upset stomach, out comes the Peppermint or the digestive blend. And if it’s that time of the month, I use the women’s monthly blend to help with the various discomforts that mother nature loves to throw at us ladies.
I hope seeing my typical essential oil day is helpful for you! I’m really grateful to have all this natural goodness in my family’s life. As you can see, I reap the benefits daily! It’s why I’m so passionate about essential oils, and why I love to share them with others.
