Before we even closed on this house, I had drawn up a few ideas on how to best use our space. I think there is often a misconception (though I do hope it’s diminishing!) that you have to have acres and acres to truly homestead or farm. That just simply isn’t the case! You might not have the space for a herd of cattle or sheep, but you can get creative and supply yourself with a LOT of your own food with just a fraction of an acre.
In case any of you are wishing and dreaming of homesteading, but think you just don’t have the space, this post is for you. I want to encourage you to make the most of what you have! So today I’m sharing the layout we’re planning for our homestead. We only have 1/3 of an acre, and currently we only have a 103 square foot garden, 3 chickens, 1 rabbit, and a worm compost bin. BUT we’ve got lots of plans for growth in the future. This diagram shows how we’re planning on laying out the homestead over the next 2 years or so.
You can do a lot with a small amount of space, so go for it!
