It’s been around 6 months since we’ve moved into our new little house on a cozy third of an acre. I can’t believe it! I thought this would be a perfect time to put ‘pen to paper’ so to speak, and share our goals for this little place of ours. We have dreams of purchasing a lot of acreage one day, but in the mean time we’re sure gonna make the most of the beautiful space we have now. These are really flexible plans and we absolutely expect to deviate from them! Life happens, but it’s good to have a plan to start from, right?
Summer 2014
- Start a worm compost bin
- Experiment with cover crops
- Seed yard with goat pasture mix
Fall 2014
- Build a rabbit arbor
- Add a trio of Silver Fox Rabbits and breed both females
- Plant a strawberry patch
- Till in cover crops and plant fall garden
Winter 2014
- Build Goat “barn”
Spring 2015
- Add two dairy goats – preferably a Doe in milk with a doeling. Either Nigerian Dwarf or Mini Nubians
- Add a beehive
- Extend Garden space
Summer 2015
- Raise some heritage breed turkeys
- Continue experimenting with cover crops
Fall 2015
- Plant Fruit Trees in front yard (Fall is the best time of year to do this in Florida – I know, we’re weird here!)

The Homestead Barn Hop

Good list! I love that it’s 3 new things max per season. So many people try too many things at once and end up either burnt out or it all going to you-know-where or they end up crazy. 🙂 You can slowly master this stuff at a great pace. As just a country girl who just wanted to marry a farmer, I fell in deep when I moved here. Figured out if I can just add one new thing a year myself and learn the other stuff (Farmer’s stuff) that is already going on, that would be perfect. Venturing into turkeys this year… we shall see.
Thanks! I really am trying hard to pace myself. I’ve noticed that’s one of the #1 pieces of advice I’ve seen on other homesteading blogs. So I’m trying to take it to heart! And I love your point about really mastering these skills. Mastery is more important then having it all right away. I was sooo tempted to add turkeys this year! I really wanted to raise the turkey for our first thanksgiving dinner in our new house…I’m glad I resisted that temptation though because it would have been too much too soon for this little city girl! Good luck with yours though! I hope it all goes smoothly for you:)
Hi Lindsey! I’m so glad I found you! I am also a newbie homesteader and I also live in N. Florida! How cool! I think your goals are great and realistic! You’ve reminded my that I need to write a new goals list. Every time I write my goals on paper- they happen! So crazy. Anyway, question- what is “goat pasture mix?”
I forgot to say to please stop by sometime! http://www.thewannabehomesteader.com
Hi Stephanie! I’m glad you found me too! So cool to find another Floridian homesteader:) I just took a peek at your blog, love it! Anyone who’s a Dave Ramsey AND Joel Salatin fan is definitely my kinda person;)
I was able to find a company that makes non-GMO pasture seed mixes. They mainly make them for deer plots but they offer one that’s designed for goats as well. It has equal parts alfalfa, chicory, medium red clover, white ladino clover, dutch white clover and perennial ryegrass. Here’s the link if you’re interested, http://www.deerseeds.com/content/goat-pasture-mix-order-pound
Thanks for stopping by!
