It is full swing summer around here. It is hot and humid. And the temps are only going to rise from here until September. I try to let our rabbit out to roam our backyard for at least a couple of hours everyday, but sometimes that can’t happen. This means he can’t go lay in the cool dirt somewhere. Rabbits are pretty sensitive to the heat, and Tundra has been blowing his coat and going through water pretty quickly lately. So I wanted to make him something to occupy his mind and help keep him cool. In my days working at a zoo we’d call this ‘animal enrichment’, those were always pretty fun to come up with! I remember seeing boredom busters for chickens, and then inspiration struck and the Carrot Pops were born! While I was at it, I made a little something for the chickens too!
These are cheaper then buying pre-made blocks at the feed store, super easy, and jam packed with nutrients. Winning!
1/4 c. Wheat
1/4 c. Split Peas
1/4 c. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds
1 Tsp Black Strap Molasses
Step 1: Combine the first four ingredients and divide into popsicle molds (mine made four).
Step 2: Place a half of a carrot into each one like a popsicle stick. Fill with water, and freeze.
Step 3: On hot days, remove Carrot Pop and give to your rabbit! If you want it to be even more fun try hanging it from the top of their cage.
And now for the Chicken’s part of the show!
CHICKEN ICE RING
2 cups Wheat
2 cups Split Peas
2 cups Black Oil Sunflower Seeds
3 Tb Black Strap Molasses
Step 1: Combine all ingredients and mix well.
Step 2: Pour into a bunt cake pan. Fill with water, and freeze.
Step 3: On hot days place this in the chicken run, or hang it if you can, and watch them enjoy their new toy!
Stay cool, friends!
