I’ve been posting tons of photos of my garden on Instagram, but it’s been awhile since I’ve posted a garden update here on the blog. I’m here to rectify that!
My first gardening season is going pretty well. So far I’ve fertilized it with a rabbit manure compost tea and I’ve used an Epsom Salt solution to put magnesium into the soil and to ward off pests. Luckily we’ve had a few nice rains too. In fact, as I type this, it’s raining! Gardening has really changed my perspective on rainy days, let me tell you!
We’ve actually been able to harvest a tiny bit here and there from the garden already. Burgundy bush beans, green beans, lettuce and herbs have all delighted our taste buds so far. My kids love going into the garden and eating straight out of it. It brings back a lot of memories for me of doing the same thing as a kid.
Other plant updates of note are that the sugar snap peas are starting to produce, though none of the peas are ripe yet. Both varieties of cucumbers are starting to produce, and the sunburst squash is starting to show a few little squashes. There are grapes beginning to grow on our vine, AND most exciting of all, one of my sugar baby watermelon vines has started to flower and I’ve been able to find one teeny-tiny watermelon starting to form! My brassicas aren’t fairing too well, but I knew I was pushing my luck with them….I just barely missed their season.
I’m so very happy with how it’s all going. I really wasn’t holding my breath for much. This is my first real attempt at gardening and we didn’t really have the resources or time to prepare the soil as I would have liked. So I’m feeling super blessed with the little successes we are having!
